The annual CVSA inspection is coming! Make sure you know what to expect.
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 30th annual International Roadcheck will take place between June 6-8, 2017, so make sure to secure your cargo! The Alliance is there to establish uniform compliance and reciprocity in the commercial motor vehicle inspection enforcement between U.S., Canada and Mexico, providing guidance to policy makers.
Over the 72-hour period between June 6th and June 8th, CVSA-certified commercial motor vehicle inspectors in Canada, the United States and Mexico will conduct full level 1 CVSA Inspections on commercial motor vehicles at Truck Inspection Stations and Laybys across North America.
Every year, safety officials from these enforcement agencies select a specific area to focus on. This year’s focus is on Cargo Load Security, so make sure you are carrying a secure load!
Here are some of the items on the inspection list:
- Check all your cargo securement devices to ensure that are structurally sound.
- Make sure you have the proper number, size, and a Working Load Limit (WLL) embossed on the material.
- Where load is visible, check to ensure the proper blocking, bracing, tarping and dunnage is used.
- Check trailer tie down anchor points for deformation, cracking and structural integrity.
- Make sure that all anchor points are at least as strong as the tiedown used to secure the load.
- Ensure that the securing portion of a tiedown exhibits no knots, stretch, deformation, wear or damage beyond the limits, or has been repaired or shortened.
- Check that “over-the-center” types of tiedown tensioners are locked in place and secured by an adequate secondary means to prevent its inadvertent release.
- Make sure load is blocked, restrained or contained in such a manner that it will not shift.
- Check that all incidental equipment that are not goods are also securely tied down.
- Check for tailboard integrity.
- Verifying that your end gates are secured in stake pockets.
- Check both sides of trailer to ensure cargo is protected from shifting or falling.
- Verify that rear doors are securely closed.
